Probably the best known movie and musical of recent times is the fantastic The Lion King. This animated feature was produced by Walt Disney and was released in the summer of 1994. It became the most successful released that year and is still the 28th highest grossing feature film. In 1998, The Lion King 2: Simba’s Pride was released.
The Lion King movie is full of memorable songs, five of which were written by Elton John and Tim Rice. In fact, Elton John performed the song Can You Feel the Love Tonight during the end credits. The score was composed by Hans Zimmer with additional traditional African music and choir arranged by Lebo M.
The Lion King musical debuted in 1997 in Minneapolis, Minnesota before heading to Broadway where it is still showing. It is now Broadway’s ninth longest-running show in history.
One of my favorite movies of all time is Born Free. This 1966 movie starred Virginia McKenna and Bill Travers as Joy and George Adamson. George is a gamekeeper in Kenya and the couple raise an orphaned lion cub named Elsa to adulthood and release her into the wilds. The screenplay was based on Joy’s 1960 book entitled Born Free. The title song was composed by John Barry and became a pop hit for singers such as Matt Monro and Andy Williams.
Two further movies followed based on Born Free. The Lions are Free (1969) tells the story of Bill Travers (husband of Virginia McKenna) journeying to a remote area of Kenya to visit George Adamson and several of his lion friends. A sequel, Living Free (1972) followed with the film To Walk with Lions (1999) depicting the last years of George Adamson’s life.
The Born Free Foundation started as Zoo Check Campaign in 1984 by Virginia McKenna and her husband and was officially established as The Born Free Foundation in 1991. They had been so affected by the plight of the wild animals after starring in the movie that they decided to do something about it. After its small and humble beginning, the Foundation has become a global wildlife charity that works throughout the world to stop the suffering of wild animals and to protect threatened species in the wild.
I hope my choices above have inspired you to wear a lion Halloween costume next Halloween.
